Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Cello Op.69

With Beethoven at the centre, this concert revolves around the emergence of the cello as a chamber music and solo instrument.  Earlier composers such as Duport set the scene with works that developed playing technique through graded studies, while Romberg’s legacy as a prolific composer and virtuoso soloist includes developments to the instrument as well.  Beethoven admired Romberg’s playing and the pair played chamber music together in Bonn.  He was also influential on Dotzauer, a composer of chamber music and nine cello concertos, and a cellist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and later the Dresden Court Orchestra.  Beethoven himself puts the cello right in the spotlight in his third sonata, widely recognised as the first to treat the two instruments as equal partners, while Liszt’s ‘The Mournful Gondola’ gives full rein to the cello’s rich and sonorous qualities in music of impassioned lyricism.

Robin Michael is solo cellist with Orchestre Les Siècles and Les Musiciens du Prince (Monaco) in addition to being principal cello with Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras. His discography includes the complete Beethoven sonatas, Brahms sonatas and complete works of Fauré with pianist Daniel Tong in addition to concerto recordings with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Munich Baroque soloists and chamber music recordings with Isabelle Faust and Steven Isserlis.

Daniel Tong's life is spent with music, as solo and chamber pianist, teacher and writer. He has played at all the major venues and festivals in the UK, and is frequently heard on BBC Radio. He is founder member of the acclaimed London Bridge Trio and director of the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival.
