Beethoven Octet in E flat major
Leading British wind quintet Atéa Quintet give today’s lunchtime concert of chamber music for wind ensemble. It begins with a partita – a suite of dance movements – by Franz Anton Hoffmeister, a prolific composer as well as a music publisher of works by Beethoven among others, and a friend whom Beethoven referred to as a ‘dear brother’. Beethoven’s own delightful Octet for two each of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns, is a cornerstone of wind chamber music. This jaunty early work dates to 1792 while he was still living in Bonn. Sandwiched between them is another suite of dance movements but of a much later date: Erwin Schulhoff’s Divertissement from 1927 features such dances as Burlesca, Florida and Charleston. Â
