Fantasy or Sonata?
Daniel Tong piano
Beethoven
Sonata in E flat, Op.27 No.1
Sonata in A flat, Op.110
Fantasy or Sonata?  The question immediately becomes clear with the subtitle of Beethoven’s Op 27 No 1 sonata (and its companion, No 2 ‘Moonlight’), labelled ‘sonata quasi una fantasia’ (sonata in the style of a fantasy). Beethoven was widely regarded by his contemporaries for his skill at improvisation and this four-movement sonata has a sense of a single span and improvisatory feel. Twenty years later, his penultimate sonata demonstrates freedom of spirit and form, particularly in the final movement that contrasts a doleful lament with a grand Bach-like fugue.
Daniel Tong's life is spent with music, as solo and chamber pianist, teacher and writer. He has played at all the major venues and festivals in the UK, and is frequently heard on BBC Radio. He is founder member of the acclaimed London Bridge Trio and director of the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival.
